An Afternoon Hike in the Woods

November 12, 2013

“It’s all part of the experience.”  That’s what my husband said after I stepped in horse poop while walking a hiking and, so obviously, horseback riding trail through Watchung Reservation.  We had taken a drive there so I could take more pictures of the fall foliage; a sweet gesture provided by my husband Sunday afternoon.  It’s nice to have a husband that’s willing to walk beside you or rather try to keep up while you’re running up hills to get a shot of a magnificent Maple.  He also sat patiently on the side of a creek while I scaled a small brick wall to put my macro setting to use while trying not to stumble off the edge and fall into said creek.  He was even rather helpful; pointing out leaves and trees to photograph and trying to artistically drop leaves into the water so I could take an action shot (it didn’t quite work out, but the effort was sweet).  But that’s what marriage is, right?  Support and public displays of craziness together.

I’ve become quite a fan of the woods.  Its colorful splendor is so magical this time of year.  It’s just cool enough to ward off the bugs, but still warm enough for afternoon walks in the sunshine.  It’s nice to have someone to share that with as well. My husband used to joke that I looked like a tourist; constantly carrying my camera around, taking pictures of just about everything.  But now he realizes that it’s not just about snapping a picture.  It’s about creating memories behind the photos while learning more about the skill behind photography.  It’s become something I really enjoy doing and I have loved looking back at the shots I’ve captured along the way.  Photography has also made me realize that beauty is everywhere.  You just have to know where to look.
