What do four ingredients and one pan equal? A delicious and cozy skillet meal for two! There's nothing better than sitting down to a hearty, comforting dish on a cold night. Especially when it's loaded with gooey mozzarella cheese! But what makes this dish even better is that it's easy to prepare and takes under 30 minutes to make!
I made this cheesy gnocchi skillet with ingredients from Hungryroot. All it takes is a package of cauliflower gnocchi (you could use regular gnocchi in place of this), Italian chicken sausage, a container of marinara sauce, and shredded mozzarella cheese baked in one pan to create this simply satisfying dish!
Different Ways to Cook Gnocchi
Gnocchi is more of an Italian dumpling than a pasta. Traditionally, it's made with potato, but I like the cauliflower gnocchi from Hungryroot. They're gluten-free and cook up just as well as traditional gnocchi. However, I favor frying the gnocchi in the skillet over boiling it.
While boiling gnocchi only takes 2-3 minutes to make, I find that it tends to give it a texture that doesn't have that pasta-like "chew" to it. So I like to pan fry it instead.
To do this, I add a little olive oil to a skillet. Once heated, the gnocchi is cooked until it's golden brown and slightly crispy around the edges. Then, you can season with salt and pepper and serve, toss it in butter and herbs, or stir in sauce and cheese, like we'll be doing in this recipe.
To make this recipe, the gnocchi is first pan-fried. Then, garlic, chicken sausage, and sauce are added to the skillet. The final step is to bake the gnocchi in the oven (so make sure you use an oven-safe skillet, like a cast iron skillet). Before baking, shredded mozzarella cheese is added on top. Then, the gnocchi cooks in the oven just until the sauce and cheese are bubbling.

When you want something cozy and comforting to eat, but don't want to spend a lot of time making it, a skillet meal like this is an easy option. Everything gets cooked and served in one dish making dinner a breeze and cleanup easy, too!
To start this gnocchi recipe, we're going preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Add olive oil in a skillet and heat it over medium-high heat. Then, we're going to add the gnocchi evenly into the pan. Let the gnocchi cooked, undisturbed, for a few minutes. Then, flip and continue to cook a couple more minutes until it's golden brown.
Now, we're going to lower the heat to medium-low. Add more olive oil, if necessary. Then, add the garlic and chicken sausage. Cook just until the garlic becomes fragrant, about 1-2 minutes.
After that, pour in the marinara sauce. Season with salt and pepper, and stir to combine.
Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top of the skillet. Then, place the skillet into the oven and bake for about 10 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and is bubbling.
When the skillet is ready, serve with grated Parmesan cheese and crusty Italian bread, if desired.

I like to add a pinch of crushed red pepper to the sauce just for a little heat. But that's just me! If you'd like to add a veggie to this skillet, you could add sautéed spinach or kale while you're stirring in the sauce.
