Today is Lunar New Year and it's the Year of the Tiger.  But the start of February also means that Super Bowl Sunday is only a couple weeks away.  So I'm taking inspiration from one of my favorite Chinese takeout appetizers and turning it into an easy dip that would work for either occasion.

There are a number of traditional Lunar New Year dishes that symbolize luck and good fortune.  But this recipe is a fun way to incorporate Americanized Chinese food into a small Lunar New Year celebration or a game day spread.

Cream cheese wontons are one of my favorite takeout items to order.  The only real difference between cream cheese wontons and crab rangoon is the filling.

Crab rangoon is obviously made with the addition of crab meat while cream cheese wontons are filled with nothing but cheesy goodness inside.  I also find that cream cheese wontons tend to be slightly sweeter.

Since I've already shared a cream cheese crab dip recipe, I wanted to make an easy cream cheese wonton inspired dip.  Consider this dip a deconstructed cream cheese wonton.  Instead of wrapping the filling in a crispy wonton shell, this dip is served with crunchy wonton chips!

Cream Cheese Wonton Dip with Air Fryer Wonton Chips

Just like my cream cheese crab dip, this dip is easily made in the microwave.  All you need to do is zap the cream cheese, add a couple other ingredients, and stir!  Then, top it off with a thin layer of sweet chili sauce and chopped scallions.  Serve warm or chilled with easy air fryer wonton chips!

We're going to start this dip by adding a the block of cream cheese to a bowl.  Microwave the mixture for about a minute.  Then, stir in the onion powder and sugar.

If you want to present your dip in a different dish, spoon it out of the bowl and spread it evenly into the dish.  Then, we're going to finish the dip with a drizzle of sweet chili sauce and some chopped scallions.

Now that our dip is ready, we need some chip!  Cut wonton wrappers in half diagonally and brush with a little olive oil.  Then, place them evenly into an air fryer basket.

Depending on the size of your air fryer, you might have to work in batches.  Cook the wontons for 4-5 minutes at 350.  They'll be golden brown when they're done.

Remove the wonton chips from the air fryer and serve with the cream cheese wonton dip!

While this dip is good the day you make it, I totally recommend making it the night before.  Just make sure to leave that sweet chili sauce drizzle until you're ready to serve.

This recipe also makes a small batch of dip, but it's incredibly easy to double (or even triple!) depending on the amount of people you're serving.

You'll also end up with extra wonton wrappers.  If you need some ideas on how to use them up, click here for more wonton recipes!
