Finding Your Furever Friend

Are you thinking about getting a new puppy this year? Let PuppySpot help you find the perfect puppy for your home!  Their No Puppy Mill Promise guarantees that the furever friend you find will be happy and healthy when you welcome it into your family!

Finding a dog isn’t always as simple as walking into a shelter, locating a breeder, looking into those cute, puppy-dog eyes, and saying, “Yup!  That’s the one!”  Over the course of a few years, I would randomly bring up my desire to add a dog to our family.  During those years, we couldn’t seem to agree on many breeds.  My husband always wanted a Blue Nose Pit Bull, but I have always been intimidated by their strength.  I wasn’t sure if that was the right breed for us.  As a homemaker and full-time blogger, I would be the one doing most of the training.  I would be the one spending the most time with the dog.  I wasn’t sure if I could handle a breed like that.

Our next breed of choice was the French Bulldog.  Frenchies have become very popular over the past few years.  I just love their squishy, little faces, big ears, and wiggly butts!  I am definitely a fan of smaller breeds. Frenchies seemed like the perfect size dog for our home.  Further research made us change our minds about this breed (totally heartbreaking to me at the moment, but I knew the search would go on).  From what we’ve read, Frenchies have respiratory problems and don’t seem to be a big fan of exercise.  Those two things made us realize that the breed probably wasn’t for us after all.

Then one day, while sitting outside on the deck with my husband, he turned to me and said, “There is another breed I’d be willing to get.”  I may have squealed with absolute delight when he said, “Cairn Terrier.” My parents had a Cairn Terrier, Dusty, who we lost last year.  Dusty was full of character.  He was a wheaten color with one floppy ear (one of my favorite things about him).  Dusty was my buddy and, while I knew there would never be another like him, I was thrilled that we would be getting a Cairn Terrier of our own!

We looked to rescue a Cairn Terrier, but had a hard time finding rescues available. So we ultimately went to a reputable breeder in our state.  Hunter came home with us at eight weeks old.  The journey into pet parenthood hasn’t always been easy, but he’s brought a lot of love into our house and family!  And there are definitely times when I joke that “I wanted a Dusty and got what I wished for.”  It must be in the breed because Hunter certainly has a unique personality all his own!

Are you thinking about adding a puppy to your family this year?  I’ve teamed up with PuppySpot to make the search a little easier for you!  Before you search for an adorable, new puppy, take the quiz below to find the most compatible breed for your family!

Can you guess what my result was?  I got “The Easy-Going Playmate.”  It’s no surprise that a terrier is in that group!  Hunter definitely enjoys the company of our big family, loves welcoming friends, and visiting neighbors. Hunter just wants to be friends with everybody!

How did you settle on your furever friend?

I’m also wanting a blue-nose pit! We had a mix that we rescued (she was definitely mostly pit, though) and now we have a red-nose. We’ve been looking for a blue nose to add to the brood. We’d prefer to rescue rather than use a breeder (we won’t go in store). There aren’t a lot of rescues around here that get a blue nose. There are a lot in Maryland/Virginia so maybe a road trip will have to happen! Don’t be intimidated by their strength, they’re like teddy bears and very protective!

I’ve definitely heard that they’re big babies and total cuddle buddies. It’s just all that muscle tone! It’s impressive, but still so intimidating to me. It’s funny because, for a little dog, Hunter is surprisingly strong. So I always joke that my husband got a pit in a little package! Good luck on your journey to find a blue nose!
