One of the cutest crafts I've seen this summer is terracotta toadstools.  The toadstools are made with a clay pot and saucer.  The pot is painted white while the saucer is painted red - or another bright and bold color - then dotted with white spots.  Once dried, the pot and saucer are glued together to resemble a mushroom.

It's a super cute craft, but I never got around to making one for my summer garden.  Sure, there's still time now, but I'm totally in spooky season mode!  So I decided to take this clay pot toadstool trend and give it a Halloween makeover.

If you're like me and still like to decorate your garden through the fall, this Halloween clay pot toadstool will make a cute addition to your outdoor decor.

The saucer is painted black with white spots and the pot is painted orange with black jack-o-lantern details for a seasonal spin.

While you could use any size pot and saucer you'd like, it's better to use a saucer that's at least one size larger than the pot.  I used a 6 inch pot with a 6.5 inch saucer.

The first thing we need to do is getting our pot and saucer painted.  Paint the saucer black and the pot orange.  Allow them to dry and, if necessary, paint a second coat.

Once the saucer and pot are dry, grab white paint and a foam pouncer and add dots to the black saucer.  Set that aside to dry.  Then, use black paint to paint a jack-o-lantern face onto the pot.

Make sure that both the pot and the saucer are upside down when painting these details onto them.

The jack-o-lantern face is easy enough to paint - or draw with a paint marker - in my opinion.  But if you have a Cricut machine, you could cut out the face with black vinyl and stick it onto the pot.

After the painted details are dry, seal everything with a coat of clear spray paint and let that dry.

The last step is to assemble the toadstool.  Glue the saucer onto the pot.  When the glue has dried, place the Halloween toadstool outside in your yard or garden.

SUPPLIES

STEPS

  1. Paint the saucer black and paint the pot orange.  Allow both to dry.  If necessary, repeat with a second coat.
  2. Once dry, paint white spots onto the saucer with a foam pouncer.  Paint a jack-o-lantern face onto the pot with black paint.  Make sure both the saucer and pot are painted while upside-down.
  3. After the details are dry, spray the saucer and pot with clear spray paint.  Let dry.
  4. When the spray paint is dry, use industrial glue or a hot glue gun to glue the saucer and pot together.
  5. Once the glue is dry, place the Halloween toadstool outside in the yard or garden.

If Halloween isn't your thing, you could still make a fall style toadstool.  Just paint the pot orange and the saucer green with white spots to give it a pumpkin vibe.
