I’m Engaged…Now What?

January 12, 2012

I am not used to the attention being all on me.  I have never been a fan of having all eyes on me.  I may be loud and out there in other ways, but when it comes to attention I’m a bashful girl.  So when my supervisor got into work today and learned the news of my engagement, I really wasn’t expecting her to get on the intercom and say “Congratulations to Jess Vignola!  She just got engaged last night!”  I am sure I had horror written all over my face.  The feet started scrambling around my desk as coworkers offered up congratulations, hugs and kisses, and wanted a glimpse at the ring.  D came in and playfully slapped my shoulder and asked, “Why didn’t you tell me when you got in this morning?”  I just shrugged my shoulders and laughed nervously.

I knew this was coming.  Mike and I have been talking about marriage for—for a really long while now.  We had talked about diamonds and our future as husband and wife.  I had a time frame.  I told everyone that I felt I would be engaged between Christmas and Valentine’s Day.  What I didn’t know was that right after the engagement, questions would be shot like cannons my way; questions that I was not prepared to answer.

“How did he propose?”

This one feels funny to answer because the shortest way to answer would be to say, “in bed,” which would give people reason to smile at me funny, poke their fingers at me and “ooh.”  Nuh-uh.  It wasn’t like that.  I’m on the rag and he’s got a bad back.  A post-coital proposal would have been a disaster.  It was sweet.  It was simple.  It was personal.  It was very “Mike & Jess.”

“Did you set a date?”

This question baffles me.  It hasn’t even been a full 24 hours and I’m expected to have a date set?  I hardly know what I’m making for dinner tonight let alone what date I think we would find suitable for our small wedding!  Don’t people like to soak in the moment before they go planning happy?

I guess I am still in shock.  I knew it was coming.  I had every idea in the world that I would be engaged to Mike in a short time.  I’m just still getting used to the fact that this is real.  This is happening.  I am wearing a ring that I have been dreaming up in my head for a long time.  I am going to be MARRIED.  It’s just very—wow.  I am engaged to a man that wants me to be his wife and the mother of his children.  He wants to deal with my crazy, my playfulness and my love every single day of the rest of his life.  He wants to be with me.  This handsome, super attractive man that I have fallen in love with over the past four years is going to change my world in a way that I could have never imagined.  And all I have to ask is…

Does an engagement come with an instruction manual?

On a side note, I came back from lunch and found a really lovely surprise waiting for me at my desk.  My ever-so-thoughtful girlfriend had congratulatory flowers delivered to me at work.  I have been so very blessed with an outpouring of love and happiness from friends and family.  I could never thank each and everyone of them enough for sharing in this absolutely  wonderful moment in my life.
