DIY Jingle Ball Dog Toy

There are times when I ask my husband, "Is he a dog or a two year old?"  Yup.  That's our Hunter.  He's a good dog.  He's just as persistent as a toddler who missed nap time.  All of those sweet puppy snuggles and his funny personality are often masked by his rather naughty side.  It's not that he's a bad dog.  He's just...special.  I mean, we've done a pretty good job training him.  It's just that sometimes, his big ears don't always work so well.  He's determined. I'll give him that.  But when his selective hearing kicks in, it's like he's a wild dog running free and my husband and I - well, we don't exist.

For instance, he loves the neighbors on both sides of our house.  He'll even forget why he's squatting on the front lawn if one of the neighbors comes outside. He'll run over to their house, roll over on his back for a belly rub, squeeze a little playtime in with their dogs, and sometimes use their lawn as his own personal bathroom. When I take him to my parents' house, he makes himself completely at home.  He gets over-excited to see my family and especially their older dog, Beau.  And sometimes, he doesn't mind his manners when it comes to treats and he'll steal them out from underneath Beau if he doesn't eat it quickly enough.

Even though Hunter might have a naughty side, he still deserves to be on the nice list this Christmas.  We love our dog and want him to have a Merry Christmas, too.  So I recently stocked up on some of his favorite dog treats like PEDIGREE® DENTASTIX™ and made him a DIY "Jingle Ball" out of a tennis ball.  I even got Beau a variety pack of CESAR® SAVORY DELIGHTS® and a PEDIGREE® JUMBONE™ to make up for Hunter's naughty, gluttonous behavior.

My husband and I love to spend time outdoors and so does Hunter.  He loves playing fetch during the day and when he can't get outside, you can often find him rolling a tennis ball around the house.  This "Jingle Ball" is a perfect way for him to amuse himself when it's too cold to play outside.  It's super easy to make and makes a cute DIY pet gift for the holidays.  All you need is a tennis ball, a craft jingle bell, a sock, and some rope or ribbon.

SUPPLIES

  • Tennis ball
  • 1/2 inch craft jingle bells
  • Sharp razor knife
  • Holiday patterned socks
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon or rope
  • Hot glue gun and non-toxic glue sticks

STEPS

  1. Carefully cut a slit into a tennis ball.  Make sure it's long enough to push a jingle bell through.
  2. After the jingle bell is inside the ball, wrap the ball up in a holiday sock.
  3. Tie it up at the top and cut off excess sock, if you wish.
  4. Heat your glue gun.  If desired, secure ribbon around the knot with a glue gun and tie it in a bow.  You could also wrap rope around the knot of the ball to make a fun rope toy. Secure it with glue, leaving room on top to tuck in and glue the other end of the rope to make a loop.

If your dog's been nice this year, they deserve a special treat.  If they've been naughty, that's okay.  Maybe a tasty Christmas treat will bring out their nice side!  You can find all of these great pet stocking stuffers in the pet care aisle at Walmart.

That's pretty much how this DIY happened. Hunter has SO many tennis balls and a bunch were pretty beaten up. It's a great way to give old tennis balls new life! Hope your pups enjoy their new toys!
