The first arrival of panettone in the grocery store had me thinking, “This would make excellent French toast!”  So I bought a box.  If you're unfamiliar with this Italian Christmas treat, it's a sweet bread made with candied fruits and raisins.  And when it's cooked in egg, vanilla, and cinnamon, it's the perfect holiday breakfast!

Now another thing about panettone - it's usually eaten for dessert during Christmas celebrations.  However, you can basically eat it any time of the day.  It can be snacked on or toasted and eaten with tea in the morning.  But turning it into French toast is a game changer!  Your Christmas morning or brunch will never be the same!

So after turning slices of panettone into French toast, I decided to zhuzh it up a bit for Christmas.  I dusted the French toast with powdered sugar.  Then, I added a dollop of whipped cream on top as well as fresh cranberries, mostly for some holiday color.

You could also dress up this French toast with a drizzle of maple syrup or some fresh fruit (oranges, strawberries, blueberries), or keep it simple with just a dusting of powdered sugar.  However you finish your French toast, it'll definitely taste like the holidays in every bite!

Eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, and milk in a shallow dish.

To start the French toast, we need to whisk the eggs, vanilla, and cinnamon in a shallow dish. Then, stir in the milk.

Next, take the panettone slices and dip in the mixture. Make sure each side is coated.

Grease a large skillet with a little butter or non-stick cooking spray and heat over medium heat. Cook the panettone until egg mixture has set and bread is browned on each side.

Serve the French toast immediately with a sprinkle of powdered sugar, a dollop of whipped cream, and fresh cranberries on top.
