Wands up! I feel like this recipe comes at a fitting time with the passing of Sir Michael Gambon aka Albus Dumbledore. Of all the fantastic characters in the Harry Potter book and movie series, I think Dumbledore is probably near the top of my favorites. He was knowledgeable, kind, and at times, a bit mischievous.
There are theories, that I haven't quite jumped into yet, about whether or not Dumbledore was actually a villain. Now, I must admit, that I've only ever made it as far as the Half-Blood Prince movie. I have yet to read the rest of the series and then watch the movies (a goal of mine this spooky season). So perhaps my opinion will change in the future.
For now, let's celebrate one of my favorite fictional characters with a recipe fit for a wizard - Puff Pastry Magic Wands. Clearly, I'm still not over the puff pastry trend! But these puff pastry wands would make a delicious appetizer or side to your Halloween feast. So they're not actually magical. But they surely taste like it!
Puff Pastry Magic Wands
Puff pastry is spread with mustard and folded up with grated Parmesan and prosciutto. After being cut into strips, the pastry is then twisted, brushed with egg wash, and sprinkled with poppy seeds. When baked, the wands have a delightful crunch and a delicious combination of flavors.
The first thing we need to do is preheat the oven to 400 degrees and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
Roll out the puff pastry sheet into a big rectangle. Then, brush half of the pastry with Dijon mustard and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. After that, we can add the prosciutto slices, slightly layering them.
Fold the empty half of the pastry onto the other half. Then, use a pizza cutter to cut the pastry into strips. Twist the pastry and brush with egg wash. Finish with a sprinkle of poppy seeds.
Place the pastry onto the prepared baking sheet and bake for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
Serve warm with extra Dijon for dipping.
