How to Take Care of Sensitive Skin at Any Age

Isn’t it strange how your body seems to change out of the blue?  My skin has always been on the dry side, but it only came to my attention a few years ago that I had sensitive skin issues.  I was packing for an overnight trip to Atlantic City and doing my hair and makeup.  It seemed like I had just put the eyeshadow brush to the lid of my eye when I broke out in a red, splotchy rash.  Not the exactly the look I was going for!  I immediately washed the makeup off of my face and the redness started to subside.

It didn’t stop there, though!  I have to avoid products with chamomile in them.  Chamomile is part of the ragweed family and I’m definitely allergic to both of them!  I also began to notice that certain laundry detergents even bothered my skin.  After wearing a newly washed pair of jeans, my legs would get extremely dry and itchy!

So today I wanted to share some tips for allergy sufferers and people who have skin issues – especially this time of year!  These tips aren’t just great for people within my own age range, but every age range.  If there’s something I learned from my grandmothers, it’s that starting a skincare routine at an early age is extremely important!

We all know by now how important it is to use sunscreen.  If you have sensitive skin, a day out in the sun without protection is a mean combination! Look for a sunscreen that’s not loaded with chemicals, but still gives you a decent amount of UV protection.

Also, it’s always a great idea to wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes if you’ll be out in the sun for a prolonged amount of time.  Get yourself a pair of glam sunglasses and a hat with a wide brim and you’ll not only look like a movie star, but protect your skin from sun damage.

If you’re prone to dry skin, staying hydrated is a must!  Especially this time of year when the sun is hot and the days are long.  Keeping your skin hydrated allows it to look radiant and healthy.

If you’re not a fan of drinking straight water, I use an infusion bottle to add some natural, fruity flavor to my water.  Check out these 10 Ways to Stay Hydrated for more ideas!

If you notice that your skin is a little drier than usual, or you’ve just gotten over a breakout, take a break from makeup.  Give your skin a chance to breathe and recover.

But don’t forget to stick to your usual skincare routine of washing and moisturizing with sensitive-skin-friendly products.  Trust me, your skin will thank you for it!

One of the most important things you can do for your sensitive skin is to read labels.  Research companies who create products targeted for individuals with sensitive skin.

Look for products that are free of dyes and perfumes.  Those are a MUST for me since products that use a lot of artificial dyes and heavy fragrances tend to irritate my skin almost upon contact.

This goes hand-in-hand with reading labels.  After researching ingredients and getting to know what products are safe for you, you’ll be able to get familiar with allergy-friendly brands you want to use in your everyday routine.
