It's during this season, and the next, that we decorate with natural touches - leaves, pumpkins, cinnamon sticks, pine branches, and the like. During Thanksgiving, you might even decorate with things like fresh cranberries, sprigs of rosemary, a flower-filled cornucopia, and turkeys.

Thinking about these natural decorations, I was recently inspired to make a nature-inspired Thanksgiving craft.  I realized that a pine cone could easily be transformed into a turkey with an acorn cap head, maple leaf feathers, and a little bit of hot glue.

So I decided to make a small gaggle of turkeys - to display around the house and give to family.  But I suspect that these would make an easy and adorable way to add to Thanksgiving table settings.

This DIY project is pretty affordable, too!  Especially if you forage for the pine cones, acorn caps, and leaves.  Just make sure you clean everything thoroughly to get rid of bugs.

If you're looking for an easy way to add to your Thanksgiving table or fall decor, create these pine cone turkeys out of just a few simple supplies.  After gluing the pine cones together, you can set them out as is.  Or you can use a black marker to give the turkeys eyes and animate them a bit more.

Before putting the turkeys together, I had to prep my supplies.  Instead of just buying acorn caps, I had decorative acorns that I took apart.  I popped the caps off of the acorns and set them aside.

Then, I heated up a hot glue gun and picked pine cones that would make good turkey bodies.  I added a bit of glue to the bottom of the acorn cap and glued it onto the flat side (bottom) of the pine cone.

Next, I had to glue on the turkey "feathers."  So I glued a faux maple leaf onto the back of the pine cone.

You could display the turkeys as they are, but I wanted to bring them to life and add eyes.  So I used a black marker and drew on some simple eyes.

After that, you can display the pine cone turkeys around the house as festive Thanksgiving decor, make them as a holiday gift, or add them to your dinner table.

STEPS

  1. Heat a hot glue gun.  Add glue to the back of an acorn cap and glue it onto the flat side of a pine cone.
  2. Trim a faux maple leaf and add glue to the bottom.  Then, glue the leaf onto the back of the pine cone.
  3. Allow glue to dry and use a black marker, if desired, to draw eyes onto the acorn cap.
  4. Display, gift, or use the turkeys as part of a table setting.

Didn't these pine cone turkeys turn out adorable?  They're a bit more sophisticated than other pine cone turkeys I've seen.  And all it took to make them was a few simple craft supplies to put them together.
