Out of our five senses, our sense of smell is definitely at the top for me. As a DIY and food-focused lifestyle blogger, I connect with different scents each and every day. They are such an important part of my craft projects and recipes.
I've made so many different fragrance projects over the years like candles, scented gel jars, and other air fresheners. Without my sense of smell, I wouldn't be able to make oil blends for these projects or tell the strength of a candle I made.
When you eat, you engage all five senses. But when you cook, there's nothing better than the smell of a delicious dinner or something sweet being baked! Of course, scent is also a major part of keeping myself and my home smelling fresh and clean!
That's why I absolutely love Tone® Body Wash! With Tone®, I can enjoy so many fun fragrances in body washes that feel absolutely luxurious! During my last trip to Walmart, I spoiled myself with a few different Tone® Body Wash scents.

Since I was in the mood for fragrance, I grabbed supplies to make a couple DIY water bead air fresheners. Have you used water beads before? They're tiny little gel beads that expand in water. Many people use them to fill vases or make sensory play projects for kids. Today, I'm sharing an easy way to turn water beads into an air freshener!
SUPPLIES
- 1 tbsp. water beads
- 2 glass jars, or Mason jars
- 100% essential oil
- Optional: leather cord and 2 small seashells
STEPS
- Add a tablespoon of water beads to a large bowl. Fill the bowl with water and let the water beads sit overnight and expand.
- Once water beads have expanded, drain the water.
- Fill jars with the water beads and add your favorite essential oils.
- Start with 10 drops of oil and increase drops from there, depending on how strong you want your jar to smell.
- If you want to decorate your jar, wrap leather cord around the top of the jar. Cut to size.
- Using a sharp knife, carefully whittle a hole into a small seashell (make sure the shell is thin).
- String the shell onto the leather cord and tie it securely around the top of the jar.
- Display your water bead air fresheners in different rooms of the house!
Makes 2 air fresheners.
These jars turned out great! The next morning after making mine, my entire house smelled like a beautiful blend of patchouli and orange! Some of the essential oil will settle at the bottom of the jar. Just replace the lid and give it a good shake every now and then to redistribute it.
The beads will shrink over time, but you can add more water to re-hydrate them. Once the water beads have absorbed water again, you can add more essential oil, as well. These water bead air fresheners are perfect for the bathroom or any room of the house that needs a little uplifting scent!

Woah this is so cool!
Thank you!
This is freaking genius!
Thank you! 🙂
The seashell is such a cute touch!
Thanks! I love anything with a beachy/mermaid theme!
I had no idea that this is how you made water beads.
Aren't they cool? I had no idea there would be so many and that they would blow up so big after soaking overnight. Fun stuff!
Super cute and looks super easy!!
Thanks!
It looks so pretty sitting there, too! My biggest thing is I want it to look as good as it smells. Totally doing this!
Exactly! I hate how most of these air fresheners are in big, plastic containers. This is so much prettier!
Do you refresh basicly the same way
Yes! To refresh, just make sure that your beads are still wet (if not, add enough water for them to absorb) and add essential oil.
This is such a great idea! I never would have thought to do this. 🙂
Thank you! 🙂
That is so fun and love how DIY can save you so much money
Thanks so much! Yes, I love when I can make things myself. It definitely tends to be cheaper and I can add my own personal touches. 🙂
I want one of these in every room of my house now! So many options for delicious scents
Yes! These are completely customizable so each room could have its own scent!
Great idea, going to have to give it a try! I saw your post linked at the THURSDAY FAVORITE THINGS 301 party. I pinned it on Pinterest
Thanks so much for pinning! Enjoy making your own water bead air freshener!
This is such a great idea. I've been looking for some fun DIY projects to do and this will be perfect. Love the idea?
Thanks, Esther! This is definitely a fun, easy little project. Plus, it'll make your home smell great! 🙂
I love this idea! Great Idea! Love the beach theme!
Thank you! It's such an easy DIY that will make your home smell amazing!
This is super cute and can't wait to try it.
How long will the scent last? Few days, weeks?
Thank you! The scent should last about a week. Although you can always add more essential or fragrance oil to it if you want a stronger scent.
Where to find water beads?
Hi Linda! You can find them on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3DmfKoT. Places like Walmart or the craft store might have them as well.
Does the EO's not melt the beads? I know many of the oils can't be used with plastics, is why I ask. Love the idea so much! Thank you for sharing this! Xoxo
Hi Robin! I've never had that happen when I've made these so you should be okay. Just make sure to give the beads a good shake after you apply the EO and you shouldn't have any problems. So glad you like this idea! 🙂
