Mother’s Day is almost here, which means it’s time to start celebrating mom and thanking her for all of the love and support she’s given us.  So I thought I would make a DIY project that combines two of my mom’s favorite things: plants and wine (now I see where I get it from)! Each year for Mother’s Day, my mom gets treated to plants and flowers for her garden. This year, I’m giving her gift a little twist and including her appreciation for a nice glass of wine.  Mom might not be able to drink what’s inside of this wine glass, but it definitely makes a nice handmade gift that she’ll be able to enjoy longer than her glass of Merlot!

So the first thing you should do when you get new air plants is soak them in water for 20 minutes.  Once the air plants are done soaking, shake off the water and allow them to dry completely.  You’ll not only want to give your air plants a nice base to sit on, but you’ll want it to look like there’s red wine in the glass.

Once you’ve given your air plants a nice bath, you can start on the terrarium.  Add red sand to the bottom of a wine glass.  I’d say you’ll probably need about 1/4 cup depending on the type of wine glass you’re using.

Start decorating your terrarium.  Add a couple of wine corks to the glass.  I definitely recommend only using about two or three.  You’ll want to make sure that your plants fit and still have enough air circulation around them.

Gently place your air plants inside the glass.  Have fun with it!  Place one on top of the sand and a smaller plant on top of a cork.  Or just use one air plant for a simpler look.

  • Wine glass
  • Red sand
  • Corks
  • Small air plant

  1. Add red sand to the bottom of the wine glass.  Make sure you add enough to make it look like there’s red wine in the glass.
  2. Next, add a couple of corks to the glass.
  3. Carefully place a small air plant into the glass, next to the corks.
  4. Display or give this terrarium as a gift!

Mist your plants with a spray bottle or soak the air plants every one or two weeks, depending on how they look.  This is a Mother’s Day project that your mom will love – especially if she’s quite the wine aficionado!

Will you be making your mom a DIY gift this year?
