I recently took a ride over to the local farm store to pick up a small live tree for our deck. While I was there, I also checked out some of their gift items. I saw an adorable little birdhouse decorated with fresh greenery and a decorative cardinal on top. I was so close to buying it for myself, but I decided against it. Instead, I grabbed supplies at the craft store to make my own version - a birdhouse covered in faux winter greenery that would last year-after-year.

I found cute ceramic birdhouses at Michaels, a couple bottles of paint, and simple greenery. The decorative birds were found at the dollar store, but I've seen them at craft stores as well. With a little paint and some hot glue, I was able to create an adorable winter decoration - something that could transition from Christmas to the post-holiday season - for myself, and one for my mom as well.

If you’re looking for one last handmade holiday gift - or you’re already easing into post-holiday decor - this sweet little birdhouse is a simple, cozy craft that fits right into the winter season. With just a bit of paint, some greenery, and a cardinal, it's a project that's easy to make and ready to display on a shelf, mantel, or tabletop.

This project is also fairly budget-friendly, which is always nice after all of that holiday shopping. If you’re feeling extra crafty, you can even build a wooden birdhouse yourself. Then, give it a couple of coats of paint, glue the greenery along the top of the roof, and finish by adding the cardinal. Once the birdhouse is complete, it’s ready to display or gift.

The first step in making this project is painting the birdhouse. I bought a wine red color for the house and a "truffle" brown for the roof and door. Just like the birdhouse I saw at the farm, I also dry brushed some brown onto the brick to give it a little more detail.

Once the paint was dry, I heated my glue gun and started gluing the greenery onto the roof. Since I had a few different kinds of greenery, I made sure to mix it all in evenly.

After the greenery was in place, I glued the bottom of the cardinal and tucked it into the greenery.

I let the glue dry and, as a last minute step, I painted the house with a coat of Mod Podge to seal it. Then, I displayed my adorable winter birdhouse.

STEPS

  1. Make sure the birdhouse surface is clean of dirt and debris. Then, add a couple coats of paint to the outside of the birdhouse. Allow paint to dry in between coats. If desired, seal paint with Mod Podge.
  2. Once painted, hot glue faux greenery to the roof. Layer as little or as much as you'd like.
  3. Then, add glue to the bottom of a decorative cardinal and tuck it into place in the greenery.
  4. Allow glue to dry and display.

This winter birdhouse really turned out adorable and will definitely be a staple in my seasonal decor! As much as I liked the birdhouse at the farm store, I knew the fresh greenery wouldn't last. Making a DIY version with faux greenery ensures I'll be able to display this birdhouse year-after-year.
