For the past couple holiday seasons, my simmer pot kits have been the best selling gift item in my Etsy shop. This year, one item has knocked the simmer pots out of the top spot - mini cinnamon scented brooms. In general, these scented brooms do pretty well in my shop. I've made a different style broom for every season. But this year, I created a Yule holiday broom as well as a winter solstice broom. Both brooms have been selling out continuously!

While cinnamon scented brooms - both large and mini versions - are quite popular during the fall season, they also add a cozy scent to the home this time of year as well. Traditionally, these brooms are hung by a door to "sweep out" negative energy and promote good luck. But they also fit seamlessly into holiday decor. The brooms I've created for this season are decorated with botanical accents, pretty velvet ribbon, and an extra splash of cinnamon oil before they're sent off to your home.

The Tradition Behind Cinnamon Brooms

From what I've read, cinnamon brooms may actually date back to medieval times. In many different cultures, cinnamon brooms have been used as symbols of cleansing and protection. Cinnamon itself symbolizes love, protection, and prosperity. But over the past 20 years or so, cinnamon brooms have become a popular home decor staple around the fall season, adding a touch of warmth and a spicy scent where ever they are placed. They're also used as part of witchcraft tools and altar decorations.

Why Cinnamon Brooms Are Popular During the Holidays

While in previous years, cinnamon brooms have dwindled from store shelves late in the fall, they've seemed to make a resurgence for this holiday season. Personally, I think that's all thanks to the "witchmas" or "gothmas" trend focusing on moodier decor, natural vibes, and magical touches. When decorated for the holiday season, they also make a lovely, scented, handmade gift or decoration for the home.

  • They smell like the holidays: Cinnamon instantly creates a warm and cozy atmosphere.
  • They’re natural and rustic: They fit right into natural, woodland, cottagecore, and farmhouse decor.
  • They're nostalgic: You might remember growing up with a cinnamon broom hung by the door. It's a timeless tradition I love to keep up with as an adult.
  • They’re budget-friendly: Depending on where you shop, a simple, undecorated cinnamon broom will generally cost under $10. The smaller brooms are even less expensive and cost just a few dollars.
  • They don't take up space: Even larger cinnamon brooms don't take up a lot of space making them a simple way to add cozy vibes to your home this time of year.
  • They tie into seasonal themes: During the holiday season, you'll find yourself sending well wishes. Oftentimes this includes health, warmth, good luck, and prosperity - all things cinnamon brooms are said to symbolize.

Ways to Use Decorative Holiday Cinnamon Brooms

If you bought one of my decorated holiday or winter brooms, first of all, THANK YOU! Now, I'd like to suggest some ways you can use them throughout the holiday season and beyond, if you so choose.

Hang It by the Front Door

Go with the classic way of displaying these brooms. Hang one on or near your front door. I have one hanging on my front and back door. Along with their symbolism, it's also nice to get a burst of cinnamon scent whenever we walk in or out of the house.

Add One to a Wreath or Cabinet Knob

Along with doors, I have seen people hanging these brooms in the middle of a wreath. They've also hung them on knobs. I've done this myself and have hung them off of my antique cabinet's doorknob.

Hang One on the Christmas Tree

These decorated mini brooms are small enough to use as an ornament on your Christmas tree. Instead of using those scented sticks sold during the holiday season, hang a cinnamon broom to add scent to your tree. This worked out perfectly for my sister who doesn't like Christmas tree scent, but enjoys cozy cinnamon!

Tie One to a Gift

Instead of a bow, tie a cinnamon broom to the top of a wrapped gift as an extra special touch!

How Long Does the Scent Last?

While I do scent the brooms with cinnamon oil before shipping them, the scent will fade over time. To refresh them, you can use pure cinnamon essential oil on both sides of the broom. Pat the broom dry with a paper towel. Wash your hands immediately after handling the refreshed brooms and be careful of finished furniture. Cinnamon essential oil will strip the finishing. Ask me how I know! Once dried, the broom can be displayed.

Give the Gift of cozy Holiday Aroma

As I've mentioned at the top of this post, these cinnamon brooms have been selling out like crazy! But don't worry - I will continue to restock these brooms throughout the holiday season so can easily add warmth and intention into your home. Add some magic to your holiday decor or gifting with a Yule holiday broom or a winter solstice broom. Available in my Etsy shop!
