It was about this time last year that I first attempted this project. After gluing rhinestone after rhinestone onto my craft pumpkin, the vision just didn't translate the way I wanted it to. So I abandoned it completely. I really didn't have any plans to work on this DIY again, but I decided to give it another go.

This year, I made it happen! I'm glad I waited a year to try making this bloody rhinestone pumpkin again. I had a better plan and better supplies!

Last year, when I attempted this project, I started gluing rhinestones onto the pumpkin haphazardly. I really didn't have a design in mind, other than "drips." I also used a glue made specifically for rhinestones. Bad idea all around. My rhinestone drips looked sloppy and the glue itself was a dripping mess.

This year, I made things much easier on myself. Before gluing the red rhinestones onto the pumpkin, I painted a dripping design with red paint. Not only did this give me a better idea for rhinestone placement, but the red painted area helps the rhinestones blend in better.

And instead of using a rhinestone specific glue, I used my tried and true hot glue gun to glue the rhinestones in place. So much easier! Plus, the hot glue tends to dry quickly. This time around, I didn't have to worry about holding each gem in place for too long.

Rhinestone Blood Drip Pumpkin

I used a black craft pumpkin to make this blood drip design really stand out and look spooky. It's very vampiresque - a bit glam and very dramatic! I was also able to find stick on red teardrop shaped rhinestones to add that extra drippy touch!

Start this project by painting red drips around the top of the pumpkin. The drips don't have to be perfect, or even completely opaque, since the rhinestones will be going on top of them. Let the paint dry completely.

While the paint dries, heat a hot glue gun. Then, start gluing rhinestones onto the painted drips. The rhinestones I used came in different sizes so I staggered the sizes around the pumpkin.

Once the hot glue dried, I added the red teardrop gems at the bottom of the drips to really bring the look together.

This time around, the pumpkin turned out exactly how I wanted it to! So all that was left to do was display it. My office needed a little something-something extra, so I have it out on my desk. It's ghoulishly gorgeous to look at while I work!

SUPPLIES

STEPS

  1. Use red acrylic paint to paint a dripping design around the top of the pumpkin. Allow paint to dry completely.
  2. Heat hot glue gun. Then, carefully add a small drop of hot glue onto the back of the red gems. Place on top of the painted design. If using different sizes, make sure to stagger sizes around the pumpkin.
  3. Finish the pumpkin by adding a teardrop gem to the bottom of each drip.
  4. Allow glue to dry completely before displaying.

This pumpkin definitely adds a touch of bling to Halloween decor. As someone who loves her share of pop culture vampires (more Buffy and Vampires Diaries than Twilight, although I do appreciate the entertaining cringe factor), I think it adds just the right touch!
