DIY Mason Jar Gumball Machine

When Ashley and I were discussing this month’s Maker’s Mix Up themes, I definitely toyed with the idea of making bubblegum ice cream for this week’s BUBBLEGUM theme.  The flavor was a favorite childhood treat of mine and the reason why I wanted to own an ice cream parlor at a very young age.  But now I’m more of a simple vanilla soft serve girl with sprinkles (always rainbow) and not entirely fond over the thought of chewing gum (or worse, swallowing it) while eating ice cream.

That’s when I knew that I had to make this DIY bubblegum machine project instead.  It’s SO cute and retro looking!  I had most of the supplies at home already, but picked up a few other things during one of my many trips to Michael’s this week! 

DIY Mason Jar Gumball Machine

If you know me, then you know I’m all about vintage decor.  This project fits in perfectly with my kitchen’s theme!  I like to think of my kitchen as retro French country with a bit of kitchy charm.  So I decided to take inspiration from the lid on the small mason jar I found.  It looks tarnished, textured, and a little beaten up.  I knew I had to find a way to match that look to the base of this project.

After passing up an array of paint colors, I headed to the spray paint case (one of my very favorite spots in the craft store!) and found a can of Krylon Hammered Finish spray paint.  Perfect! It didn’t give this project the exact tarnished look of the mason jar lid, but the texture came pretty close!   Overall, I’m super pleased with how this little project turned out.  It looks adorable in my kitchen filled with colorful candies!

SUPPLIES

  • Small mason jar + lid
  • E6000 glue
  • Ceramic pot
  • Hammered finish spray paint
  • Colorful candies or gumballs

STEPS

  1. Spray paint the outside of the ceramic pot and allow to dry completely.
  2. Next, flip the ceramic pot over and attach the mason jar to the pot with E6000.  Allow glue to dry.
  3. Fill the mason jar with candy, sprinkles, or even loose change!  Twist on the lid and display!

This project would make an adorable wedding favor or party favor for a kid’s birthday. Paint the mason jar lid and ceramic pot to match your decor or theme!
