It's funny how sometimes the simplest of recipes or food crafts turns into the most complicated. Take these pretzel rod sparklers. They're basically just pretzel rods dipped in chocolate and decorated with sprinkles. Pretty simple. Right? Wrong! It was a journey to get to this point of success.
I did well at Michaels and found some 4th of July sprinkles to use (as well as the rubber spatula, towel, and picks in the photos). Then, I went to Whole Foods to look for some vegan white chocolate. I couldn't find pretzel rods, but spent a small fortune on plant based white chocolate. So then the search was on for pretzel rods. Three stores later, I finally found them at Dollar Tree.
I came home, set up my ingredients to make my pretzels, and started melting my vegan white chocolate. Well, it looked more like candle wax than chocolate. So disappointing (especially because of what I paid for it).
Thankfully, I had a bag of white chocolate chips in the cabinet. I figured that I wouldn't be able to eat any of these pretzels, but I could share them with my family. I guess the white chocolate had sat in my cabinet for too long because it didn't melt properly.
At that point, I felt pretty much defeated and ready to give up. But my husband just happened to be in the area of the craft store, so I texted him and asked him if he could pick up two bags of white candy melts for me. And here we are! My hero!
Candy Coated Pretzel Rod Sparklers
Despite everything, these turned out pretty darn cute, if I do say so myself! And even though I can't eat them, I can tell you that they smelled amazing! These salty-sweet treats must've been pretty good since my husband devoured quite a few of these after I made them!
The first thing I did was melt my candy melts over low heat. I stirred the candy melts constantly until they were completely melted and smooth. Then, I turned off the heat to start dipping. Depending on the candy melts you're using, you could also melt them in the microwave.
I prepared a couple baking sheets with parchment paper and started dipping the pretzel rods one at a time so I could add sprinkles immediately after. I sprinkled the pretzels with silver sugar sprinkles first. Then, I used a mix of patriotic sprinkles to finish them off. I made a total of 16 pretzel rods.
Let the candy coating set completely. Once the candy coating has hardened, store the pretzels in a cool, dry place. If you're planning on gifting them, you could even place them into cellophane bags.
Candy Coated Pretzel Rod Sparklers
Ingredients
- 12 oz. white candy melts
- Pretzel rods
- Silver sugar sprinkles
- Patriotic sprinkle mix
Instructions
- Prepare two baking sheets with parchment paper, add your sprinkles to small bowls, and set aside.
- Add the candy melts to a small pot and heat over low heat.
- Stir the candy melts continuously until they're completely melted. Then, turn off the heat.
- Dip pretzels into the candy melts. It's easier to dip the pretzels if you pour melted candy coating into a jar first, then dip pretzel rod into candy coating.
- Place dipped pretzels onto prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle pretzel with silver sugar sprinkles. Follow with the patriotic sprinkle mix.
- Continue until all of the candy coating has been used. Allow dipped pretzels to set for 10 minutes, or until the candy coating has hardened.
- Store the pretzels in a cool, dry place.
