Amish Paradise

June 5, 2011

This has been a fun and rather exhausting weekend.  Friday I took a mental health day from work and went to admire the Amish in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  I had never been there before and my cousin, who has, gave me the grand tour.  We arrived at Kitchen Kettle Village and did some great shopping there.

We picked up treats at a meat shop, chocolate at a sweets shop, spoiled our dogs at a pet shop, found gifts and candies at a souvenier shop and made multiple trips to the car to pack our loot!  We walked from Kitchen Kettle, to a candle shop.  I bought my mother a Shoo Fly Pie candle.  We then walked to the Intercourse Canning Company and stocked up on all kinds of jarred goodness.  From there we had a small bite at a pretzel shop and took in the scenery.  While we were sitting outside, we saw a horse and buggy pull up behind a truck at the drive-thru of a bank.  It was a mix of modern meets simplicity.  It was amusing to see.

We visited Mt. Hope Wine Gallery and tasted all sorts of delicious wines.  I bought a bottle of Pink Catawba, a bottle of Sangria and two bottles of Vignoles, because the name is so close to my last name.  I gave a bottle to my parents.  From there we went to two farmer’s markets and then drove around aimlessly enjoying the scenery.

It’s completely peaceful out there and we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day.  We wrapped up our trip to Lancaster with a drive to outlets where I found a great pair of Ray Ban sunglasses for Mike’s birthday at the Sunglass Hut.  Then we had a dinner buffet at the Family Cupboard restaurant where we stuffed our faces with comfort food and peanut butter pie.  Before heading home we stopped at the VF Outlets where I scored a great deal on a Dooney & Bourke “Carla” bag.

Yesterday was my first official day of fishing on my father’s boat.  I caught a fluke and spent the rest of the day with my head down, napping.  I got a big headache.  I thought it would turn into a migraine, but Mike thinks it was sinus pressure.  So now I’m a bit turned off from the boat for the rest of the summer.  It’s like a bad night of drinking.  You drink too much vodka in one night, spend your head in the toilet the next day and swear you’ll never drink vodka again.  Of course you’ll eventually try vodka again, but for the meantime you’ll stick to rum.  Rum will be flea markets, outings with friends and family and land loving.  As long as Mike brings us home fish that I can cook for us, I’ll be happy.

I have to admit, I think I’m having withdrawals from the peace and quiet.  Mike told me I would never last living as the Amish do because they have ugly shoes.  He’s probably right.  But that trip made me appreciate a different culture, a different way of life and the peacefulness of the countryside.
