It's been quite some time since I made a homemade sugar scrub. But I have grown a whole lot of mint this year - two pots of common mint, one pot of pineapple mint, and one pot of orange mint - and I've made a heck of a lot of tea with it already. I've been trying to figure out other ways to use all of this wonderfully fragrant mint I've grown this year. Somehow I've completely forgotten about one of my favorite homemade skincare products - sugar scrub!
Sugar scrubs are super easy to make, feel so good on your skin, and they're also a great way to use fresh garden herbs. Have lavender in your garden? Make this DIY lavender and coconut oil sugar scrub! And if you're like me and have a ton of mint growing right now, I'll show you how to make a refreshing and totally cooling sugar scrub. Along with a combination of fresh mint varieties, I also added lemon verbena to this sugar scrub to give it an extra boost of citrus and skincare benefits!
Benefits of Citrus-Mint Sugar Scrub
The combination of soothing and cooling mint and lemon verbena is perfect for summer - and especially those hot, sweltering days! Not only does it feel nice on your skin, but there are also added benefits to making your own natural citrus-mint sugar scrub.
- Sugar: Provides exfoliation for smoother skin by removing dead skin.
- Coconut oil: Hydrates skin while locking in moisture. May also have anti-aging properties.
- Mint (Orange and Pineapple): Naturally cools skin. Also helps tighten pores.
- Lemon Verbena: Helps reduce puffiness and redness. May also help to even out skin tone.
- Lemon zest: Exfoliating. Contains anti-aging properties and brightens skin.
DIY Citrus-Mint Sugar Scrub
Not only will this sugar scrub help to make your skin glow, but it's also a nice homemade gift to give someone for a special occasion - or no occasion at all! Just spoon it into a pretty jar, label it, and finish it off by tying on some pretty ribbon.
To start this scrub, grab your fresh orange mint, pineapple mint, and lemon verbena from the garden. Wash and dry the herbs and remove the leaves from the stems. Then, chop them up to release the oils.
In a medium mixing bowl, add white sugar and melted coconut oil. Stir to combine. You want the mixture to be moist, but still kind of gritty. If you want a less gritty texture, add a touch more oil.
Add the essential oil and gently fold in the herbs and lemon zest. Spoon the scrub into a clean, dry, airtight jar. Label, if desired.
SUPPLIES
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup coconut oil, melted
- 1 tbsp. fresh orange mint leaves, chopped
- 1 tbsp. fresh pineapple mint leaves, chopped
- 1 tbsp. fresh lemon verbena leaves, chopped
- Zest of 1 small lemon
- 5 drops orange or lemon essential oil
STEPS
- Wash and dry herbs. Remove from stems and chop leaves.
- In a medium mixing bowl, add sugar and coconut oil. Stir to combine. Adjust oil, as needed.
- Add essential oil and gently fold in herbs and lemon zest.
- Spoon scrub into clean, dry, airtight jar or container.
Use this sugar scrub 2-3 times a week to freshen up your skin. Concentrate on areas like your elbows, knees, and the bottom of your feet. Store the scrub in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. It can be stored in the fridge, as well. Make sure to avoid getting moisture inside the jar. This scrub has a shelf life of about 3-6 months.
