Most days, I would rather be a night owl and make use of those extra hours while the house is quiet and everyone’s asleep to finish my list of things-to-do.  But the truth of the matter is that I’m much more of a morning person.  The only problem is that some of those 6AM mornings turn into 8AM sessions on the couch watching TV and before I know it, I’ve wasted half of my morning catching up on episodes of Gilmore Girls.  That’s why I always like to try to get into a morning routine.  It’s especially important since I work from home and that can lead to all sorts of distractions!

On the average morning, I’m usually up by 6 or 7. But in the words of Lorelai Gilmore, my day doesn’t really begin until I’ve had my coffee, coffee, coffee.  One cup is usually all I need to feel ready to get my morning started.  So before I even think about eggs or toast, I heat up my coffee maker and pour myself a big cup!  That little bit of quiet time allows me to go over the day ahead of me and assess what things need to be done.

WAKE UP AND GET FOCUSED

While I sit and sip, I check my phone and take care of any e-mail and notifications I can before I sit down to my computer.  I’ll flip through my planner and see what’s on the agenda for both my blog and personal life.   If I’m having a good week, I even have a to-do list started and ready to be crossed out.

CLEAN UP

These little morning rituals are just as important to me as, say, washing my face, brushing my teeth, and making the bed – which, by the way, I totally recommend doing first thing in the morning. I can’t get focused if I know there are dishes in the sink and clutter to clean up.

GET READY

While some days I could totally spend the day in my pajamas, I force myself to get dressed just as if I was leaving home and heading to an office.  I’ll do my hair and I might even splash on a little makeup depending on how my day is going.  Even if I know I’m not going anywhere, it just makes me feel better to be dressed and put together.

EXERCISE

Some mornings, I’m even amped up enough to get a walk in before I sit down to work.  So I strap the harness on my dog and we’ll go to the park and walk a mile.  I don’t look at my phone during that time.  I just spend that time with my thoughts and the connection I’m making with my dog.  When I come home, I usually feel a lot more refreshed and ready to tackle the rest of my day.

Why It's Important to Have a Morning Ritual

Basically, we all need a reason to get out of bed in the morning – even if it’s just sipping a cup of coffee as soon as you wake up.  That morning cup of coffee is kind of like my daily cheerleader saying, “Okay.  You’ve got this!”  It’s a way to start the morning on a positive note with something I enjoy.

Even though I have a coffee shop within walking distance from my house, it’s actually more convenient for me to just head to ShopRite to stock up on my coffee essentials like Dunkin’ Donuts K-Cups, Dunkin’ Donuts creamer, and Truvia Natural Sweetener.  Right now, if you buy 2 participating coffee products and 1 participating creamer, you’ll get a free box of Truvia Natural Sweetener 40ct now thru 3/12, while supplies last.  That will definitely keep you prepped and ready for a morning ritual you can fully enjoy!
