How did I just find out that October is National Pizza Month? I mean, every month is pretty much pizza month in my family. Friday night's been our designated pizza night ever since we started dating, my father makes a pizza almost every time we're over, and the rest of the family's just as pizza obsessed!
So I couldn't let this monumentous foodie occasion pass without making a celebratory pizza! And since National Pizza Month is celebrated in the month of all things pumpkin, I knew I had to incorporate pumpkin into my pie!
I know what you're thinking - pumpkin on pizza? But trust me! It works! Remember my Pumpkin Vodka Sauce with Pancetta? It's like that!
The pumpkin adds a subtle sweet and nutty squash flavor. When you pair it with toppings like creamy gorgonzola, sweet Italian sausage, and butter sautéed onions, it's a match made in pizza topping heaven!
Sausage, Gorgonzola, and Pumpkin Pizza
Making homemade pizza is easy and delicious! All you need is premade pizza dough, a simple pumpkin pizza sauce, and pizza toppings like mozzarella cheese, Italian sausage crumbles, sautéed onions, and crumbled gorgonzola cheese.
Bring your pizza dough to room temperature (it'll be easier to stretch when it's warmer) and preheat the oven with a pizza stone set inside to 450 degrees. Stretch the dough on a lightly floured surface and place it on a pizza peel or parchment paper.
Heat a skillet over medium heat and add the sausage crumbles to the pan. Cook until browned and set aside. Then, wipe out the skillet and add a little butter. Once the butter has melted, add onion and cook until it starts to brown.
Mix pumpkin puree and pizza sauce (I love Trader Joe's jarred pizza sauce) in a small bowl. Spoon the sauce onto the dough and spread it evenly, leaving a border around the edge for the crust.
Now we can start topping our pizza. Sprinkle garlic powder over the top of the sauce and season with salt and pepper. Follow with mozzarella cheese, sausage crumbles, and onions.
Carefully slide the pizza into the oven and onto the stone. Cook the pie for 15 minutes, or until the crust is nice and crispy and golden brown. Remove the pizza from the oven and sprinkle the gorgonzola cheese over the top.
If desired, add a sprinkle of dried sage on top. Then, cut the pizza into 8 slices and serve!
