We are officially a home with three legit Christmas trees! We have a small one in the office, a pencil tree in the dining room (that I recently got off of Facebook Marketplace), and our main tree in the living room. It doesn't seem to matter how many ornaments and decorations hang on the trees, I never seem to be finished decorating them. From now until Christmas Day - and even after - I will be hanging new ornaments.

I've been trying to fill some of the empty branches with ornaments I've created over the past month or so.  Our office tree is mainly filled with ornaments I've made for my shop. As for the other two trees, I've been busy making DIY ornaments.  I love working with fillable glass ornaments. They can be customized in so many ways! Fill them with paint, load them up with glitter, or personalize the outside with etching cream.

I decided to fill and etch a glass ornament to make it look like a little snow filled wonderland! This ornament is super easy to make. If you have a Cricut cutting machine, you can create a small stencil out of removeable vinyl. Or you can use precut sticker stencils. Then, etch a word or phrase onto the ornament and fill with artificial snow or iridescent glitter.

You can also add some tiny bottlebrush trees, or other miniatures, inside the ornament if you'd like. Then, add an ornament hanger or twine to for hanging. This ornament adds a wintry touch to your tree or makes a nice handmade gift for someone this holiday season.

The first thing we need to do is etch our ornament. If you're using precut stencils, create the word "snow" or a phrase using the stencils. I used my Cricut Joy to cut a small "Let it Snow" stencil out of removable vinyl.

Make sure the outside of the ornament is clean. Put on some gloves and brush a thick layer of etching cream onto the ornament. Wait about three minutes. Then, rinse the etching cream off with running water. Pat the ornament dry.

Once the ornament is dry, remove the cap from the ornament and fill it with artificial snow or iridescent glitter. At this point, you can also add some mini bottlebrush trees or holiday miniatures and figurines.

Then, pop the cap back onto the ornament, add a metal hanger or a loop of ribbon or twine, and display on your Christmas tree! This ornament adds such a pretty touch to the tree. And the etched wording gives it that frosty feel!

SUPPLIES

  • 3 inch clear glass ornament
  • Alphabet sticker stencil
  • Etching cream
  • Glass etching brush
  • Buffalo snow
    • Or iridescent glitter
  • Optional: mini bottlebrush trees, or other holiday/winter miniatures
  • Ribbon, baker's twine, or metal ornament hangers

STEPS

  1. If you're using precut stencils, make sure the outside of the ornament is clean. Then, stick the stencil onto the ornament and proceed to etching.
  2. If you're using your Cricut cutting machine, open the Design Space file and resize, if necessary. Then, cut out of removable vinyl and reverse weed the image to create a stencil. Place onto the ornament and proceed to etching.
  3. Put on some gloves to protect your hands. Brush a thick layer of etching cream onto the stencil. Wait about three minutes, or as directed by product packaging.
  4. Rinse off the etching cream with running water. Then, pat the ornament dry and allow it to dry completely.
  5. Once dry, remove the cap from the ornament and fill with artificial snow or iridescent glitter. If desired, add mini bottlebrush trees or other miniatures.
  6. Place the cap back onto the ornament and add a metal hanger, ribbon, or twine for hanging. Display on the tree or use as a handmade gift.

I definitely recommend hanging this snow filled ornament by the Christmas lights hung on the tree. The light will glint off of the iridescent flakes or glitter and make it look like a little sparkling snowscape!
