I talk about my dog a lot on my blog and around social media. So as you probably know, Hunter is only in his first year of puppyhood, which means getting the right nutrition is vital. He grew so fast! In just nine months, he went from his tiny little puppy that I was almost afraid to handle, to this solid, almost full grown dog that is so much fun to run around with!
We’re first time fur parents, so before we got Hunter, we did a lot of research on what foods you can and can’t give dogs, and what pet foods were the best choices. After getting Hunter, we received sound advice from the breeder and our vet. We put Hunter on a grain-free diet, due to skin allergies, give him a daily multivitamin and put a drop of coconut oil in his food.
But now that Hunter’s almost a year old and a completely healthy pup, I feel a little less worried about keeping him on strict diet. We don’t feed Hunter table scraps or give him a ton of treats during the day, but every once in a while he gets some apple or carrot as a special treat. It’s food that I feel good giving him.
So when I heard about DISH from Rachael Ray™ Nutrish®, I decided to let Hunter give it a try. After I poured out his first bowl of DISH Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe with Veggies & Fruit, I was pleased to find actual chunks of real chicken, sliced of carrot, peas, and pieces of apple. I was also pleased to find that there isn't any corn, wheat, soy, or gluten, poultry by-product meal, fillers, artificial preservatives, colors or artificial flavors in this dog food. Hunter loves carrots so much that he actually picked those pieces out of his bowl, put them aside on his mat, and ate them after eating the rest of his food! Silly dog!
We feed Hunter food with wholesome ingredients, so we should be feeding ourselves that well, too! With the weather warming up, I’ve been trying to eat a lot better and adding more fruits and veggies into my own diet. I’ve been buying a London broil about once every week since it always seems to be on sale lately. For our household of two, we usually get two meals out of one piece of London broil. It’s not only budget-friendly, it’s a delicious and versatile cut of meat, too.
I’ve also become a really big fan of red bell peppers. They’re sweeter than green peppers and cooking them seems to bring out their natural sweetness. They bring such a great flavor to dishes that I find myself putting them in everything! So I decided to char my peppers over an open flame, cut up my London broil into cubes, chop up red onion, and boil some brown rice to make easy Un-Stuffed Kebabs. It's all the goodness of a Summer kebab without the stick!
Steak Un-Kebabs
Ingredients
For the steak
- Marinade homemade or bottled
- 1 pound London broil fat trimmed and cut into chunks
- 2 red bell peppers cut into chunks
- 1 red onion cut into chunks
- 2 cloves of garlic chopped
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Extra virgin olive oil
For the rice
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 cup brown rice
Instructions
- Fill a pot with water and beef broth. Bring to a boil.
- Add rice and reduce to a simmer. Let rice cook while starting steak and veggies.
- Heat a cast iron skillet on medium.
- Add your steak to the skillet and cook until it's to your liking.
- Remove steak and set aside on a plate.
- Add peppers, onion, and garlic to the skillet.
- When veggies are just about softened, add steak back to the skillet.
- Cook until steak is warm and serve over brown rice.
Notes
I highly recommend charring your peppers before adding them to this dish! A minute or two on each side will do it. I also recommend using half water-half beef broth to cook your rice. Using broth adds big flavor to rice that you wouldn’t otherwise get just cooking it in water.
This meal is easy, delicious, and there are guaranteed to be zero leftovers (or at least enough to split for lunch the next day)!
If you’ve ever watched Rachael Ray’s talk show, then you know how much she loves her pets and giving back to animal shelters. In fact, she has her own rescue called Rachael's Rescue that helps shelter dogs in need of assistance. I’ve been a fan of Rachael Ray's recipes for a while. If I can trust her to make a meal I’d put on our dinner table, I can definitely trust her to create a dog food line good enough for Hunter!
