Over the past few years, we've been making efforts in our home to be more eco-friendly. We've added new houseplants (lots of new houseplants!), have a water purifying pitcher in the fridge, changed to energy saving light bulbs, and I've been using essential oils around the house.
Tea tree oil is one of my favorites to use in our home to naturally clean and disinfect. When I first discovered tea tree oil, it was mostly known for its acne fighting properties. But there are so many other uses for this amazing essential oil!
As someone who's a self-proclaimed clean freak and enjoys having a neat and tidy home, I keep spray cleaners on hand in the kitchen and bathroom at all times. A lot of common cleaners contain toxic and harmful chemicals that have a harsh smell.
I've been trying to replace these cleaners with plant-based ones. Most recently, I made an all-purpose cleaner using tea tree oil. This DIY cleaner does a great job cleaning up! It works on kitchen and bathroom surfaces - including mirrors - and smells good, too!
It's nice to have a natural cleaner on hand that not only gets out the grime, but sanitizes, as well! Something that's so important to all of us right now!
Make sure your spray bottle (and please use glass) is clean before making this cleaner. It's also important that you use distilled or purified water to avoid bacteria growth. Tea tree oil is a bit stinky on its own, so you can use your favorite essential oil - or a combination of oils - to create a pleasantly scented cleaner.

A note about tea tree oil and pets
I posted this DIY on my personal Facebook page a couple weeks ago and was asked about using tea tree oil around pets. Before I go any further, let me just say that I'm not an essential oil expert, by any means. I've just done a bunch of reading about them. So I only know what I've read.
Tea tree oil is toxic to cats, dogs, and humans when ingested. It's also dangerous to pets when used topically. Some articles have stated that it can be used to combat fleas when diluted at the proper dosage, but I wouldn't recommend it. However, this cleaner should be safe to use around pets as long as they don't ingest it.
Other uses for tea tree oil
Other uses include:
- Skin care
- Hair care
- First aid remedies
- Aromatherapy
- Stress relief
- Toothpaste and mouthwash
- Sore muscle relief
Tea tree oil is a multi-purpose essential oil. It really can do it all and a few drops can go a long way!
