Dog moms are moms, too. I don't care what anyone else says! Dogs are like toddlers in furry suits. Demanding, but cute creatures who constantly want to play, eat, and go the bathroom. Let's not forget about having to clean up after them, keep them healthy, and the worries that happen when they don't feel their best. And while I fully recognize that I did not carry my dog for nine months and birth him from my womb like a "real mom," we don't have kids, so Hunter's as close as it gets.

That said, Mother's Day is this coming weekend, so I wanted to give a little shoutout to the fur moms! While I will absolutely acknowledge the work that goes into raising children - one afternoon with my toddler nephew or young nieces leaves this aunt completely exhausted - I'm giving fur moms their props, too. So I decided to create a little dog mom Mother's Day project with Hunter's help.

Do you remember the projects I made with Hunter over the Halloween season last year? We created the cutest Boo Paw Print Pumpkin and Ghost Paw Print Pumpkin. They're now two of my absolute favorite Halloween decorations! So I wanted to, once again, create a project with Hunter's help and make something I could use during the spring or summer - or even all year 'round!

Painted Paw Print Flower Pot

When I thought about what I could make for this time of year, I immediately thought about our backyard. It's where we spend the most time. So I decided to paint a clay pot using Hunter's paw to make colorful paw print flowers. Then, I'd paint simple stems and leaves to finish the floral look. Once dry, the pot could be sealed to use outdoors, but could also work indoors as a pot for a houseplant.

The first thing I did was clean up Hunter's paws with a pet wipe. I also made sure the outside of the pot I was using was free of dirt or debris. Then, we took our pot outside and had a little crafternoon.

I started by adding some pet-safe, non-toxic acrylic paint to Hunter's paw. Then, I stamped his paw all around the pot (he wasn't having it as much as he did when we made pumpkins so it got a bit messy). I left room at the bottom for the stems and leaves.

Once all the paw "flowers" were stamped, I gave Hunter's paw a final cleaning and let him take a break. Then, I added a little blue to the bottom of the pink flowers and used green paint to paint stems and leaves underneath.

I allowed the paint to dry and once it was dry, I just gave the pot a quick coat of clear paint since I intended on using the pot outside for flowers.

Once the clear paint was dry, I was able to plant a mix of flowers inside (salvia and lantana) so I can enjoy this pot every time I go outside this spring and summer.

SUPPLIES

  • 10" clay pot + saucer (you could also use a plastic or ceramic pot)
  • Non-toxic acrylic paint in different colors
  • Foam brush, or small sponge
  • Paintbrush
  • Optional: clear spray paint
  • Pet cleaning wipes

STEPS

  1. Clean and dry one of your pet's paws. Then, in a protected area to craft in, add paint to their paw and gently press onto the clay pot, leaving room at the bottom of the pot to paint stems.
  2. If necessary, add more paint to the paw. Then, continue adding paw prints around the pot. Wipe your pet's paw clean.
  3. With green paint, paint stems and leaves underneath the paw print "flowers."
  4. Allow the paint to dry. If desired, seal with clear spray paint.
  5. Then, plant a flower or houseplant inside and enjoy your new flower pot.

Despite the project getting a little extra messy this time around (Hunter was a bit too anxious to get his post-painting treats), I think this came out totally cute and is a sweet little keepsake! It makes me smile every time I walk passed it on our backsteps.
