There's something about a red, white, and blue color combination that instantly feels like summer. Maybe it's because it's such a seasonal classic around Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. Either way, I love incorporating red, white, and blue into natural outdoor decor, like flowers, this time of year. So I decided to create a container garden with this color combo that fits right in with these patriotic holidays, but is also subtle enough to leave out all summer long.

I'll admit that I'm not an overly patriotic, flag-waving type of person. But with America celebrating its 250th birthday this year, it felt like the perfect opportunity to add some timeless Americana touches to the yard. For me, this planter isn't about making a patriotic statement - it's about celebrating the summer season and the nostalgic charm of a classic red, white, and blue color palette.

For this container garden, I used a combination of some of my favorite summer flowers - red calibrachoa, white petunias, blue lobelia, and an accent spike to add height in the center. Together, they create that classic "thriller, filler, spiller" effect with a soft and relaxed patriotic theme. As the flowers grow, they'll fill in the planter and cascade beautifully over the edges. The tall accent spike gives the red, white, and blue combination an almost firework-like effect, making the whole arrangement feel fitting for summertime celebrations.

Red, White, and Blue Container Garden

With just a few summer annuals and a large container, you can create a striking arrangement that lasts all season long. Whether you're decorating for a holiday celebration or simply looking for an excuse to head to the garden center and play with color, this red, white, and blue container garden is an easy way to add a festive touch to your outdoor decor.

To start this container garden, I filled a barrel planter with standard potting soil. Then, I mixed in all-purpose fertilizer and earthworm castings.

Next, I planted the flowers around the edge of the planter - the red calibrachoa first, the white petunias next, and then the blue lobelias.

Then, I planted the accent spike in the center of the planter and gave the container garden a thorough watering beofre setting it in a sunny spot on our deck.

SUPPLIES

STEPS

  1. Check your planter for drainage holes. If there aren't drainage holes, drill a few into the bottom. Then, fill it with potting soil.
  2. If desired mix in all-purpose fertilizer and earthworm castings.
  3. Next, plant the flowers around the edge of the planter in red, white, and blue order. Then, add the accent spike to the center of the planter.
  4. Once the plants are in place, water the container thoroughly and set it in a sunny spot.

From Memorial Day through Labor Day, this container garden adds a colorful seasonal touch to patios, porches, and outdoor spaces. It's a beautiful way to welcome summer with a cheerful, classic mix of red, white, and blue flowers that feels festive without being over-the-top.
