If there's one thing I can't ever seem to have enough of in my kitchen, it's towels! I usually have two hanging up at all times - and, depending on what messes I'm making in the kitchen - sometimes I might even have three or four. For Earth Day, I thought we'd upcycle some wine corks and turn them into stamps to use on kitchen towels.

Not only is this a fun project to make for Earth Day, these towels would also make a cute gift for Mother's Day. I'm making simple circular shapes using wine corks and fabric paint. Then, I'm stamping the corks in shapes like cherries - a perfect pattern for springtime!

It's important to make sure you're using fabric paint for this project. Fabric paints are specifically formulated to adhere to textiles. The paint bonds to the fabric, allowing it to withstand wear, tear, and weathering. Fabric paint also shouldn't crack or peel. Especially after washing. So make sure you're grabbing fabric specific paint for this stamping project.

I wouldn't use a terrycloth towel for this project. Instead opt for linen or cotton tea towels (for a sustainable option, thrift them). They're a thinner towel with a flatter surface to work on. Iron the towels out before stamping. Then, shake them out or even use a lint brush for a quick clean up. Then, stamp your designs and allow them to dry before washing and using.

SUPPLIES

STEPS

  1. Unfold your towel onto a protected surface (like a piece of cardboard or craft mat) and visualize what design you want to make and where you want to stamp it.
  2. Pour a little fabric paint onto a paper plate, or paint palette, and dip an end of the wine cork into the paint.  Stamp paint a couple times on a scrap surface to remove excess paint.  Then, begin stamping circles on the towel in the design of your choice.
  3. Once fabric paint is dry (should take about 1-2 hours depending on the paint), use fabric markers to embellish your design.
  4. Allow the fabric paint marker to dry before washing, gifting, or using.

That's it! Now you've got some pretty springtime towels to use in your kitchen or wrap up as a gift. If you want to take this Earth Day project one step further, slice off the painted end of the cork. Then, toss the cork into your compost pile. Break them into pieces first to help them break down easier. Just make sure you're using natural wine corks instead of synthetic ones. Those still need to be tossed in the trash.
